10 Facts About Catholicism

I am back with another blog post! Also before I start happy holy week! There are many misconceptions about the Catholic Church. I believe many people are misinformed on the Church and only know half truths. So I would love to share about the faith that I love so so much!

  1. Catholicism was created by Jesus Christ himself. It can be traced all the way back to 30 CE. I know this has stirred loads of controversy among non catholics. I am sorry but I am just sharing facts. The Catholic Church was the only church for the first 1,000 years of Christianity. “According to Catholic doctrine, Catholicism is the original Christian Church. Christianity is the true religion, and Catholicism is true Christianity.” (Catholicism vs. Christianity)
  2. We don’t worship the Blessed Mother we honor her. She is the mother of Jesus Christ and praying to his mother is extremely powerful. Think about this, Jesus is perfect and he has to listen to what his mother tells him. Having a strong relationship with his mother makes your relationship with Him so much stronger.
  3. We believe in purgatory, which is a time of cleansing and purification before you can enter the gates of heaven. You can’t enter into heaven in the state of sin, you have to be clean.
  4. Catholicism is the largest denomination of christianity, with more than 1 billion (not all are practicing). Brazil has the most Catholics in the world #flex.
  5. The Catholic Church has seven Sacraments- Baptism, Reconciliation, First Communion, Confirmation, Marriage, Holy orders, Anointing of the sick.
  6. Catholics have daily mass, which is not an obligation but an opportunity to grow in your faith. Only going to mass on Sunday is an obligation of a Catholic.
  7. Women are not allowed to become Priests, the Catholic church is female and priest are married to the church. But women can become Nuns and Sisters which they then are married to Jesus.
  8. The Catholic bible has 73 books. The Catholic bible is the original bible. The Catholic bible differs from the protestant bible in the fact that it has 7 more books and the translations are often different. 7 books were removed from the protestant bible because it differs from their theology. The 7 books are Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, Barush, 1st Maccabees and 2nd Maccabees
  9. There is over 10,000 Saints recognized by the Catholic Church. We pray to Saints so they can intercede for us. So technically, we ask Saints to pray for us.
  10. Friday’s during lent in the United States we abstain from meat, but in other places around the world it is every Friday. The Bishops of the United States have said we don’t have to abstain from meat on Fridays year round, but if you don’t abstain you are to add a penance. We abstain from meat as a penance and in remembrance of Jesus’s death on the Cross.
